It can be difficult enough when traveling for leisure to look as good at the end of the day as you did at the beginning, but imagine you’re also walking in heels and serving customers! As a private flight attendant, presentation is important – and that includes how you present yourself from beginning to end. On a short hop, this shouldn’t be an issue. But what do you do if you’re flying from one side of the country to the other or flying across an ocean?
- The first thing you need to think about is staying alert. Get plenty of rest before the trip so that you start out wide awake to give yourself a head start. If you’re able to use scents, there are a few that will help keep you alert and focused. You can either wear one as a perfume, keep one aside in a personal area to sniff when needed or keep a scent-soaked piece of felt in a locket with air vents.
Scents to try are lavender, peppermint, jasmine, lemongrass, cinnamon and rosemary. Just make sure to keep in mind any sensitivities your clients may have. - Pulling your hair into an updo will also help. Don’t make it too tight and cause a headache or scalp fatigue, and smooth back any possible loose strands with mousse, gel, or hairspray. Keep extra on hand to touch it up as the flight goes on. Between trips, make sure to condition it regularly as high altitudes can sap moisture. Rinse it in flat beer once a month and try a regular coconut oil treatment along with always using a good shampoo and conditioner.
- Hydration is also key. Drink lots of water to keep your skin glowing and apply moisturizer as needed. Being fresh from the inside-out makes all the difference!
- Don’t waste your break times, no matter how short. Sit down, eat – lots of protein, fruits and vegetables especially! – and nap if you can.
- Invest in quality makeup, specifically things like long-wear lipstick that won’t wipe off when you sip a drink or lick your lips. A good foundation and powder will hide any marks of weariness your face might otherwise show. And make sure to wash it off before bed!
- Stand up straight! Good posture not only feels and looks good, but it keeps your eyes open. It will help you avoid backaches as well, which can wear on your energy.
- Keep a stash of toiletries, including a good antiperspirant to swipe on in downtime, and a toothbrush and toothpaste.
- Invest in wrinkle-free fabrics for your uniforms, keep extra pantyhose in case of runs, and make sure to always have a stain-remover stick with you. Spills are inevitable, but they don’t have to ruin your look.
